Need in Deed is a non-profit service-learning organization serving the children and teachers of Philadelphia (and beyond) for over 25 years.
With huge school loans looming over me and an uncertain future, I joined Need in Deed in May of 2000, just as I was earning my MFA from Tyler School of Art. Although it was outside my field of study, I had the skills they needed and I liked their concept of connecting the classroom with the community, so when I was offered the job as their Office Manager, I committed to five years with the organization.
My duties included accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, taxes, filing and general clerical work. The job description quickly expanded to include graphic design and layout, video production and editing, as well as website design.
I left the organization in May of 2005, exactly five years after I’d begun. I had started Amoeba Art Shops the previous summer, and left to run my new business full time.
